Meals And Beverages To Reduce Heartburn

Approximately 20% of the population in the U.S. experiences heartburn; and while many simply ignore the symptoms, like a burning sensation in the central chest area, others simply turn to Antacids. However, neutralizing medication is not a long-term solution, as it can have negative effects on one’s digestion if taken too often for a prolonged period.

For this reason, people who experience heartburn problems should explore healthy, low-acid, yet delicious meals which will in turn improve their overall health.

Chilli Salmon

It comes as no surprise that salmon is referred to as a heart healthy fish. After all, Omega 3 - one of the most essential oils found in salmon can prevent high-blood pressure, and even reduce blood clotting. When prepared with chilli, salmon doesn’t only get a spicy exotic taste, but its health benefits increase, as chilli actually serves as an anti-inflammatory agent.

That’s right! As contradictory as it may sound, this strong spice has the ability to fight inflammation caused by high pH levels, i.e. an acidic state which is not conducive to one’s overall health. With regular consumption of this heart-healthy food, one can restore their pH levels to an alkaline state in a matter of days.

Look For Anything Green

Asparagus, cucumber, dill, and artichokes are just a few of the healthiest greens known to man. Unfortunately, even just the sound of some of these vegetables bring back unpleasant childhood memories to some, when they were forced to eat the “green food” that didn’t taste good. The good news is, there are various ways to prepare these, and even camouflage the taste with spices. But have you ever wondered why greens are labeled the healthiest food? One of the main reasons why greens are so good for you is because they contain chlorophyll, which works wonders when it comes to detoxification. Their pH level is under the acidic limit (7- 14), which means they belong to the alkaline food group. Needless to say, consuming them on a regular basis will decrease inflammation in the body, boost the immune system, and increase your energy levels.

But What About the Beverage You Can’t Live Without - Coffee?

Even though coffee is considered one of the most acidic drinks (4-5 on the pH scale), when prepared with cold water,  65% of its acidity is lost. This happens “because hot water isn’t used, and the oils that are full of acid aren’t pulled through into the coffee mixture as much as they would be in a hot beverage. This makes it gentler on the stomach and digestive system as well”, state the health expert of Epyk. So next time you reach for a cup of joe, make sure it’s cold brewed.

Maintaining an alkaline state (pH 7-14) is important, as it can prevent the onset of various illnesses, colds, and flues, not to mention inflammation and cancer. So, next time you feel that acid building up, know it’s time to switch to some greens, healthy fish, and cold-brew coffee.
